The results of the Interphone study have just been officially published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, exactly 10 years after its launch by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Originally, they were planned for 2004, but they have always been remote, so the data were contradictory. The final conclusion is very disappointing, although expected because of rumors about the quarrels between the experts.

Indeed, this study aimed to examine the effects of mobile phone use on the risk of brain cancer has been inconclusive or in one way or another. The 12 coordinators of the study group failed to reach agreement. Some proved the existence of an increased risk of glioma (rare cancer of the nervous system) in heavy users of mobile phones, compared to those who do not use it or a little. This applies, for example, French and Swedish researchers. However, others like the United Kingdom found the opposite relationship, as if the heavy use of mobile protected glioma. For some, this is evidence of the danger of radio waves, for others it is a methodological bias.

In the end, experts have failed to show the existence of a causal link between brain cancer and mobile phone use.

However, the means have been developed: the study was conducted in 13 countries *, where a total of 14,000 people was followed with a national and European funding of 19.2 million euros. Note that 5.5 million came from the industrial sector of telephony, but to guarantee the independence of researchers, funds channeled through the International Union against Cancer (UICC).
