Taurine and D-glucuronogactone are substances added to energy drinks for their stimulant effects, which have not been proven by scientific studies inconclusive. Meanwhile, be aware that the doses used are high, far exceeding the benefits derived from food. Such amounts are suspected to be toxic to the nervous system to taurine and kidneys for the D-glucuronogactone. In the absence of validated data, the European Food Safety Authority (AFSA) recommends not to exceed one and a half cans of Red Bull per day.

Note that some drinks are fortified with vitamins B3 and B6. Beyond 5 cans per day toxicity threshold is reached with risks to the liver and nervous system.

Finally, note that the stimulating effects of energy drinks are potentiated with alcohol.
