Stapleton schools are in the Denver Public School district. Stapleton’s home elementary school is Westerly Creek which was built in 2003 and resides in the neighborhood itself. The school shares joint facilities and play areas with another school, the Odyssey Charter School. The Odyssey Charter school is a K-8 “expeditionary learning” school which focuses on teaching through action and direct student experience and participation. This means students are not sitting in desks listening to lectures and practicing worksheets, a typical day would include trips outside to investigate the area around the school for a nature project. Enrollment is by lottery system.
The home middle school for Stapleton is the William R. Roberts school. William R. Roberts school is also K-8 and is located in the neighborhood itself.
The home high school is George Washington which is a 20 minute drive from Stapleton. In the neighborhood itself however, there is a very unique charter high school, the Denver School of Science and Technology which opened in Stapleton in 2004. The school provides a liberal arts education with a science and technology focus.
Admissions to the DSST are by lottery, but students must complete an admission application that contains short essay questions (for example, Why do you want to attend DSST?). They also ask for household income information. Admissions are only for students in 9th grade and a few in 10th, they do not do admissions for 11th or 12th grades. In 2008, DSST is set to offer a middle school (grades 6-8) program.
A new high school, Stapleton High School, is planned for the neighborhood. Current plans have the school opening between 2010 and 2012.
There is a special school, the Anchor Center for Blind Children also in Stapleton.
